Home Prayer

Prayer

The five daily prayers (salaat) are one of the obligatory pillars of Islam and they are inherently fundamental to leading life as a good Muslim. It is only through worship and good deeds that we may seek to attain forgiveness for our sins. Just like bathing five times a day would leave one spotless, observing the daily prayers purifies and cleanses the depths of our souls.

The extra rewards one gains from congregational salaat are many and well documented. Therefore it is a primary duty upon us to secure places of worship where we can hold prayers in Jamaat. In Cambridge there are a number of places to pray, and these are listed in the section below.

Places to pray

Jumma Prayer

The ISoc organises Jumma Prayer each week during term time and it is usually held either at St. Columba's Hall, near Downing Site or Bowett Room, Queens College. The venue may change week on week so please check the Week Ahead.

Abu Bakr Mosque, Mawson Road

The first thing that strikes you when you come to the Mosque is the sheer variety of people you meet – people from all nationalities, colours and backgrounds, praying side by side. The mosque is quite large, has a separate sisters section and a library. Talks are organised weekly on Friday evenings.
The best time to be there is during Ramadan, when the Mosque provides free Iftars, hosted by the different ethnic communities in Cambridge.

See the mosque website for more details: http://www.cambridgemosque.com

Sidgwick Site Prayer Room

The prayer room is the focal point of much of ISoc's activities. See the map for details of its location.
Jamaat is held 5 times a day and it is the best place to meet fellow Muslim students.
For details of how to get access to the prayer room, please contact kv263[@cam.ac.uk]

Graduate Union Prayer Room

The prayer room is open to Muslims from 12pm-1pm and 3.30pm-4.30pm on weekdays. See the map for details of its location

Other places

There may well be convenient places to pray in your department. Feel free to get in contact with us to find out if there is a suitable place nearby.

For the mind to ponder. . .

Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah . Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."

[Qur'an 39:53]
