So Can I Practise Islam Freely In Cambridge ?
Alhamdulillah – all praise is due to God - Muslims are completely free to practice their faith whilst studying and spending time in Cambridge . The atmosphere is one of tolerance, appreciation and understanding. Furthermore Muslim students, just like adherents of any other faith here, have the opportunity of communicating the message of Islam and informing those interested as to what the religion is all about. The stereotypical stuffy image that is often attached to universities such as Cambridge is on the whole very inaccurate and misleading.

The Islamic Society
The Islamic Society (or ISoc) is a very active student body with almost 1000 members in and out of Cambridge . It hosts regular social and educational events to help Muslims learn about their faith and meet with each other in a pleasant environment. Recent highlights of the term calendar have been an Islam Awareness Week held in
Lent Term and a weekend course on The History of Muslim Civilisations in March of
2005. A typical week is packed with a study circle, a session of sporting activity, perhaps a talk by an invited speaker, and of course Jumuah prayers.

Facilities
In terms of facilities, there are a fair number of Halal restaurants and takeaways, and some Colleges have now started preparing Halal meals for students in College canteens. Although the mosque is quite far from the city centre, a prayer room is located in the very heart of the city, making it convenient for students who are rushing between lectures, practicals and supervisions. Additional arrangements are made for the Jumuah prayer too.

The Local Community
The local Muslim Community in Cambridge provides an array of Islamic services and events, as well as engaging actively with the Isoc by providing assistance and support to the students here. An extensive and regularly updated website www.cambridgemuslims.info helps to keep those interested in touch with developments and upcoming events in the community.
