Applicants

Well you've got to the ISOC access page so that's a start! You're here because you're thinking of applying to Cambridge, or someone you know is, or you may simply be bored. Insha Allah the rest of this section will help you in all these cases.

Cambridge is a weird place - no ifs and buts about it, but weird in a good way. 'Bedders', 'Gyps' and 'Plodge' are just some of the lingo used here which no-one outside Cambridge knows about. On top of this you've got the collegiate system, supervisions, 8 week terms and men dressed in tweed jackets armed with their smoking pipes to 'deal' with. Apart from these peculiarities it is an unrivalled academic institution (the most Nobel prizes from any university in the world) which has produced some of the greatest minds the world has known (Newton, Hawking and Watson & Crick to name a few) and will continue to do so Insha Allah. Once you're in, you become part of an illustrious institution, the effects of which will stay with you for the rest of your life Insha Allah.

The role of the Access Committee in the ISOC is to advise, encourage and assist in whichever way possible, those thinking of applying to Cambridge.

There are many misconceptions that unfortunately Cambridge carries with it, on top of the many that universities as a whole come with. And we haven't even got to the Muslim issues of going away to university!

Insha Allah our aim in Access is to clarify some of these points and then, if you decide that Cambridge is the place for you (which Insha Allah you will), to do whatever we can to help you get that place.

Within this section of the website you will find advice on personal statements, student questionnaires with useful information, an alternative guide to the colleges and subjects which Cambridge has, and contact details. Please PLEASE please if there is anything else you need, questions that need answering, more details on a particular college/subject, advice on applying/interviews, or if you are just unsure about some points, get in touch with us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and we'll be happy to help

Hoping to see you in Cambridge Insha Allah.

The ISoc Access Database

The Database is being 'refurbished' at the moment, to correspond with the new website. In the meantime, you can access a slightly older version. Click here to launch it.

Shadowing Scheme

The Cambridge University Islamic Society, in partnership with the CUSU Shadowing Scheme, are offering Year 12 students the opportunity to shadow a current undergraduate studying a common subject of interest. This scheme will enable you, the shadow, to see everything a muslim student does on a day-to-day basis:  lectures, supervisions, sport, socialising, shopping and so on. Prospective students would come to Cambridge on a Thursday afternoon and stay until lunchtime on the following Saturday.

For the mind to ponder. . .

And say: "Truth has (now) arrived, and Falsehood perished: for Falsehood is (by its nature) bound to perish." We send down (stage by stage) in the Qur'an that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe: to the unjust it causes nothing but loss after loss.

(Quran 17:81-82)
