Assalam Alaikum

Well you've got to the ISOC access page so that's a start! You're here because you're thinking of applying to Cambridge, or someone you know is, or you may simply be bored. Insha Allah the rest of this section will help you in all these cases.

Cambridge is a weird place - no ifs and buts about it, but weird in a good way. 'Bedders', 'Gyps' and 'Plodge' are just some of the lingo used here which no-one outside Cambridge knows about. On top of this you've got the collegiate system, supervisions, 8 week terms and men dressed in tweed jackets armed with their smoking pipes to 'deal' with. Apart from these peculiarities it is an unrivalled academic institution (the most Nobel prizes from any university in the world) which has produced some of the greatest minds the world has known (Newton, Hawking and Watson & Crick to name a few) and will continue to do so Insha Allah. Once you're in, you become part of an illustrious institution, the effects of which will stay with you for the rest of your life Insha Allah.

The role of the Access Committee in the ISOC is to advise, encourage and assist in whichever way possible, those thinking of applying to Cambridge.
There are many misconceptions that unfortunately Cambridge carries with it, on top of the many that universities as a whole come with. And we haven't even got to the Muslim issues of going away to university!

Insha Allah our aim in Access is to clarify some of these points and then, if you decide that Cambridge is the place for you (which Insha Allah you will), to do whatever we can to help you get that place.

Within this section of the website you will find advice on personal statements, student questionnaires with useful information, an alternative guide to the colleges and subjects which Cambridge has, and contact details. Please PLEASE please if there is anything else you need, questions that need answering, more details on a particular college/subject, advice on applying/interviews, or if you are just unsure about some points, get in touch with us and we'll be happy to help.

Hoping to see you in Cambridge Insha Allah.

CU ISLAMIC SOCIETY OPEN DAY 2008

The Cambridge University Islamic Society will be holding an Open Day for A-level and GCSE students on
Friday 14th March 2008, open to anyone who feels it addresses their interests.

The Open Day has been arranged in the past to address various Muslim-specific concerns which affect their decision to apply to a university like Cambridge. A particular source of apprehension can be the misconception that the Muslim way of life is incompatible with living and studying at Cambridge, a university which unfortunately is dogged by a reputation of being an elitist institution that welcomes only a particular type of person.

The Open Day will address concerns that students may have about 'halal' dietary requirements, facilities for prayer and certain other aspects of university life that may discourage them from applying, such as the alcohol orientation of social activities and so on. It will also be an opportunity for students to meet other Muslims already at Cambridge and learn more about the application process and valuable interview skills. There will be additional time during the day to talk to tutors and students about particular degree courses.

Places on this Open Day will be limited. If you are interested in the open day please complete the application form and send it back to the address speciifed. Please also have a look at the Schedule for the Open day.

Welcome to the ISOC Access Database!

First we would advise all prospective applicants to take a look at these links:

Minority ethnic recruitment at the Faculty of Education
http://www.educ.cam.ac.uk/pgce/mer.html

http://www.oa.waveflex.com/ - " If you are thinking about applying to Oxford or Cambridge then this is the site for you ! " - straight from their mouths, what else needs to be said? (except that you really shouldn't want to apply to Oxford...)

http://www.cam.ac.uk/cambuniv/undergrad/interview/ - A whole host of resources and facts available for download for applicants who have been granted an interview. Particularly noteworthy are the videos of mock interviews and the "Cambridge Interviews: The Facts" booklet.

http://www.mentornet.net- A well-rounded site for women applying to engineering or science based degrees. Once registered you can access their database of personal statements.

Then there is our very own database...to launch please click here.

The database has only just been set up, so it is still in its very early stages. In the future inshaAllah we will have an even greater assortment of questionnaires, personal statements and alternative prospectuses to aid you in your quest for Cambridge entry.

If you are a current Cambridge student and would like to help enlarge the database, please contact accesscom @ isoc.co.uk.

We also have questionnaire forms that you may download and complete here. Please fill them in and send them to the email above.
